Lint Trap Regulations

Pre-treatment requirements for commercial laundries are set by your local water authority rather than by a single national standard. They vary by state and change over time, so confirm the current standard before you submit.

Requirements for lint arrestors generally call for a fixed screen or fail-safe cut-off mechanism robust enough to prevent removal or bypass, a removable basket used in conjunction with it, a handle or grip on that basket, an aperture no greater than 4 mm on both, and materials that withstand high temperature and extreme ranges of pH.

Discharge temperature is regulated separately. Many Australian trade waste rules limit discharge to around 38–40°C at the treatment plant inlet; Sydney Water’s limit is 38°C. Where laundry discharge runs hotter, an averaging and cooling pit is generally required.

Plumbing work must comply with AS/NZS 3500 and local plumbing codes, including adequate pipe fall and ventilation.

Always obtain prior trade waste approval from your local water authority before installation. This is critical for laundromats. Viking supplies full technical drawings to assist with authority submissions, and can provide authority liaison support — get in touch.
